Indian Government Announces to Repeal Articles 370 and 35A

Today Amit Shah has announced in Rajya Sabha that the Modi government has decided to repeal Article 370 of the Constitution to grant special status to J&K.

As per the orders, the government have divided the state into two Union territories – Jammu and Kashmir, which will have a legislature, and Ladakh, which will be without a legislature.

Amid massive troop deployment in the valley, Jammu and Kashmir’s most prominent politicians Mehbooba Mufti, Omar Abdullah and Sajjad Lone are under house arrest. Internet services and mobile services are banned in Srinagar district as section 144 was imposed from midnight.

What Are The Highlights Known So Far

  • Article 370 has been abolished with the President signing an order that comes into effect “at once.”
  • Article 370 gives J & K its own constitution and decision-making rights for all matters barring defence, communications and foreign affairs.
  • The UT status for J & K on the basis of on an assessment of the “prevailing security situation” fueled by cross-border terrorism.
